A Look at Alzheimer’s Through the Lens of Early Childhood Education: What do Alzheimers and early childhood education have in common? At first glance, you might say, nothing, however, as I lived through Alzheimers with my family members, I realized that many of the principles that I learned and practiced in my professional calling, as a professor of early childhood education, could be implemented to help navigate through the changes in my loved ones, supporting them as the disease progressed. As early childhood educators, we are committed to ensuring that children, families, educators, and community members thrive in kinship, that kinship extends to older adults in our society, including people who live with Alzheimers or other forms of dementia, and that many of the principles of early childhood education can be thoughtfully applied to our loved ones who live with Alzheimers.

Children’s kinship relations are varied, complex, and shaped by generations of more-than human connectivity in the places we live and work. This Speaker Spotlight invites participants to join University of Victoria (UVic) Child Care pedagogist, Narda Nelson, in rethinking possibilities for nurturing ethical kinship relations in early years practice through a common worlding approach, as named in the BC Early Learning Framework. This includes learning to thrive within ‘uneasy relationalities’ (those creatures, forces, conditions that are not always easy, and sometimes challenging in unexpected ways). What does a common worlding approach look and feel like in everyday practice? How can we attend to more-than-human kinship alongside children without romanticizing their relations and the myriad of creatures, materials, and forces with whom they share place?
